WORKSHOPS

(*ALL CLASSES ARE NON-PERFORMANCE “OPEN” CLASSES*)

“THE BASS/DRUM OPEN CLASS”

This specialty workshop has been a big success!  It’s become a workshop that our singers take over & over again. Most of us who do cabaret shows don’t regularly get to sing with a bass player and a drummer. This workshop gives you that chance!  Now you can have the experience of hearing and feeling the different musical support when singing with piano and bass and drums.  In this open class, bring in songs you have already worked on, songs you know very well, and try them out with a fuller musical accompaniment.  And while we’re at it, we’ll experiment and do these tunes in different styles.  You may discover you’re a different singer! The first 4 of the 6 sessions will be with a pianist and a bass player; the last 2 sessions, we will bring in a drummer!

Number of Sessions: 6     Tuition: $500.00    Class Sched: 6 Mondays beg April 3

“THE VOCAL COACHING OPEN CLASS”

In this class we will work on phrasing, melody, time, pitch, etc. Your classmates will be your audience and you will be theirs while they’re singing. You will learn from watching each other perform and listening to my feedback and suggestions. You can bring in any material you wish. It will be a safe, supportive environment where you can be completely comfortable letting go and challenging yourself.

Number of Sessions: 6   Tuition: $350.00 Class Sched: TBD

“JAZZ VOCAL WORKSHOP”

This is a workshop on the principles and application of Jazz Singing.  It’ll be a great opportunity for you to explore what’s involved in a jazz style of singing, which usually focuses more on rhythm and improvisation. In this workshop:   I will de-mystify the often intimidating style of “jazz” singing.

  • You will learn and explore practical concepts having to do with jazz phrasing, rhythm and improvisation.

  • You will learn how to improvise on the melody and you’ll discover how simple this really is once you start with some fundamental techniques.

  • You will experiment using different rhythms while improvising on the melody.

  • You will learn how to listen in a different way to recordings as well as the musicians who are accompanying you.

  • A CD has been compiled for you with examples of all the points covered in the class sessions

“STYLES WORKSHOP”

The Styles Workshop is a 6 week course where we focus on a different musical style every week. The styles I will cover are: Swing; Ballad (jazz/standard); Pop/R & B; Blues; Latin-(Brazilian).

You will learn the characteristics of each style and what distinguishes them from one another.  We will sing, listen, discover, discuss and sing some more!  It’s a fun, ear-opening way to explore, understand, and to TRY musical styles that you may not have been inclined to try before.

Number of Sessions: 6     Tuition: $400.00     Class Sched: TBD

“DUET/HARMONY WORKSHOP”

In this workshop, students will sing duets in order to learn how to harmonize with another singer or as a ‘back-up’ for a lead singer. Techniques are presented for those who have always had trouble finding a harmony note and maintaining a harmony line. And for those who are already comfortable harmonizing, numerous concepts and methods that you may have not considered, will be explored.

"SCAT SINGING WORKSHOP"

In this workshop, the art of scat singing will be demystified!  I will methodically break down this musical mystery and give you the tools you’ll need to improvise a scat solo.  You’ll learn which notes, rhythms and syllables to choose…depending on the tempo, feel, etc of the material. You will also listen to and analyze the approaches of different singers during the evolution of scatting. (Instructor permission required)
